Mob sets IRB personnel’s house on fire in Manipur’s Thoubal district

On Wednesday, police reported that an angry mob had set fire to the home of an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) member in Thoubal district, Manipur. The incident occurred the previous night after a large group of 700-800 people had attempted to break into the 3rd IRB camp at Wangbal, four kilometers away, to steal firearms. Forces had initially attempted to restore order by using tear gas and rubber bullets, but when the mob fired weapons, the forces retaliated. The mob additionally blocked roads leading to the camp to stop reinforcements, but the forces were still able to pass through. A team of Assam Rifles that was en route to the camp were also attacked by the mob, who shot a jawan in the leg and burned their vehicle. A 27-year-old man, Ronaldo, was also shot and later died while being transported to a hospital in Imphal. Ten others were injured in the clashes, six of whom had serious wounds and were admitted to a hospital in Imphal.
