Lok Sabha privileges panel to probe Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s ‘misconduct’ on Friday

The Lok Sabha’s Privileges Committee will investigate a complaint of bad behavior made against Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Chowdhury was suspended from the lower house last week. The committee, led by BJP member Sunil Kumar Singh, will discuss the motion passed by the Lok Sabha on August 10 about Chowdhury’s repeated bad behavior towards the House and the Chair. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was unhappy with Chowdhury’s behavior, as well as with BJP member Virendra Singh’s behavior during a debate on the no-confidence motion against the government. Singh apologized to the Chair and did not face any consequences. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi described Chowdhury’s actions as habitual and deliberate. Joshi mentioned that Chowdhury continuously disrupted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply to the no-confidence motion debate and interrupted speeches by Home Minister Amit Shah and other ministers in the Lok Sabha. Despite repeated requests and warnings from the Chair, Chowdhury has not improved his behavior. And, every time he debates, he accuses without any evidence,” Joshi said before suggesting that Chowdhury should be suspended from the House until an investigation by the Privileges Committee of the Lok Sabha is conducted.
